In Virginia, once you have been arrested, there are three main types of courts that you may have to deal with: General District Courts (GDC), Circuit Courts and Juvenile and Domestic Relations (J&DR). General district courts handle less serious cases such as most traffic violations and misdemeanors punishable by up to a year in jail. Circuit courts handle serious cases such as homicide, robbery, burglary and other felonies. Juvenile and domestic relations courts handle crimes committed against a minor child or household member.
If you know someone who has been arrested in Virginia and need information, the official government site says you can call the local county adult center or magistrate. TIP: We have found this to be fruitless. It takes forever to get someone who can help. Instead, we recommend that you email a bail bondsman immediately. In Virginia bondsmen have direct access to the court records so they can tell you the status of the defendant, if bail has been set yet, how much it is and a lot of other information. Almost all of them answer email 24 hours a day and respond quickly. Email them the name, and birthdate if you have it. Even if you don’t have it they can usually look it up. You can get their email off their websites.
