Getting a bail bond in Louisiana is a simple and easy process since Louisiana has strict licensing requirements for bail bonds agents, often called Commercial Sureties in this state, and are monitored by the Louisiana Department of Insurance. To be an agent in Louisiana, by law they must first be an apprentice for a full six months under a licensed bail bonds producer. They must also take a pre-licensing course, pass an examination and a background check. Many reputable Louisiana bail bonds agents are also members of the Association of Louisiana Bail Underwriters.

In Louisiana bail bonds fees are usually 12% except in Orleans Parish which is 13% or Jefferson Parish which is 12.5%. In addition there are release and processing fees which vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Collateral in addition to these fees is also required and in most cases a Promissory Note and an Indemnity Agreement is used for that purpose. If the defendant does not meet his required court appearances the signer would be responsible for all expenses or losses suffered by the bondsman. WARNING: Generally speaking, Louisiana bail agents do not allow client defendants to leave the state while out on bail. If you are from out of state, live out of state, or do business out of the state of Louisiana, it is important to clarify with the bail bond agent their travel rules before signing a bond contract with them.

Louisiana allows Bail Reduction Assistance Agencies. They may be able to help ensure a lower bail initially or even request a pre-exisiting bail amout be lowered. If this is important to you, you may want to ask them if they offer these types of services when you email the bail bond agencies.

If you are arrested in Louisiana there are basically five ways to be released:

1. Surety bond – use a bail bondsmen which will require a fee and perhaps collateral;
2. Cash bond – post cash for the full amount of the bond with the court or jail;
3. Property bond – use real property (such as a home) with the court;
4. Release On Own Recognizance, O.R. – the judge can release the defendant on their own recognizance.
5. Release on Citation -Cite Out
